Mark Chance, PhD

Mark R. Chance is a Distinguished University Professor at Case Western Reserve University, a Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors and an accomplished scientist-entrepreneur specializing in drug discovery and molecular diagnostics. Born on July 17, 1958, he earned his Ph.D. in Biophysics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1986.
He has held several prestigious positions at Case Western Reserve University, including Vice Dean for Research at the School of Medicine (2011-2021) and Distinguished University Professor (2017-present). Prior to CWRU, he served as a Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and held positions at Georgetown University and New York University.
As an internationally recognized expert in proteomics, structural biology, and systems biology, Chance has published over 325 papers with more than 21,000 citations. He founded and directs the Center for Proteomics and Bioinformatics at CWRU, which has attracted over $120 million in research funding since 2005. He also serves as Director of the Center for Synchrotron Biosciences at Brookhaven Laboratory since 1994.
In 2006, Chance co-founded NeoProteomics, where he serves as Chief Scientific Officer. The company focuses on drug target leads. Currently, he is also the Managing Member of Cleveland Life Science Advisors, LLC, where he helps accelerate promising life sciences startups in the Cleveland and Midwest ecosystems. His scientific journey was influenced by his uncle, Britton Chance, a renowned biophysicist at the University of Pennsylvania. Under his leadership at CWRU, he has created numerous research jobs and helped secure millions in federal grants, maintaining the school’s position among the top 25 research medical schools in the US.
